Description:

Perspectives on Labour and Income is a quarterly journal that keeps you up-to-date on recent labour market trends, fluctuating employment levels and changing work requirements. Inside Feature Articles, you will find reports on income and employment levels; international comparisons; education and training, pensions and retirement, and more.

In addition, every issue includes Forum: for thought-provoking ideas and commentary; What's New: a news bulletin that presents major findings on the latest special Statistics Canada surveys and analytical studies, and Key Labour and Income Facts: a quick reference to over 50 leading indicators on the labour market, income, household expenditures and more. All of the articles have appeared previously in the free monthly online editions of Perspectives. New articles are published online and subsequently appear in the next quarterly print edition. In addition, the print publication will from time to time have adaptations of articles released in other publications. These "reprints" will not appear in any online issue of Perspectives. New articles are published electronically each month and appear in print form, quarterly. You can order individual print issues, or register a one-year subscription for future releases.

Description:

The Winter 2011 print edition of Perspectives on Labour and Income, released December 19, 2011, features three articles previously released online:
  • "The financial well-being of the self-employed" uses a variety of data sources to examine how the self-employed differ from paid employees in income level and dispersion, wealth, retirement preparation, and spending.
  • "Delayed retirement: A new trend?" examines changes since 1976 in a number of indicators that show the aging of Canadian workers and a growing number of workers delaying retirement, and attempts to reconcile the two apparently contradictory trends using a new expected working-life indicator.
  • "Regional economic shocks and migration" evaluates the impact of regional economic shocks on the migration of residents, and examines the extent to which a deterioration in the relative economic position of a region and a decrease in personal income are linked to higher probabilities of migration.
This edition also features yearly updates on gambling and unionization, a cumulative index from 1989 to 2011, as well as the "What's New?" section, which highlights recent reports and studies of interest from Statistics Canada and other organizations.
